Dam Water usage

Sirromet is very aware of the need for us all to change our attitude towards water use, not just in the current drought conditions, but in the long term.

Long before the current water restrictions we have been proactive in reducing mains water use.  Wineries are traditionally high users of water due to the amount of cleaning required, particularly during vintage, to ensure effective sanitation. However, not all surfaces in the winery require drinking quality water for cleaning, and at Sirromet we utilize dam water for cleaning the concrete floors. Dam water is also used extensively all over the property for irrigation.

Rain water holding

In keeping with our responsible attitude to water usage, Sirromet harvests a considerable portion of our drinking water needs from rainwater. Rainwater is collected from the roof of the main buildings. Rainwater is stored in tanks, undergoing filtration and disinfection and is supplemented with main water prior to being utilised as drinking quality water. The site only reverts to 100% mains water when supplies of rain water are low.

Dam Evaporation

Another area of help in reducing CO2 emissions is to have solar power panels joined together and placed over our dams, both here at Mount Cotton and at the vineyards. This both reduces power needs but also reduces water lost through evaporation because the panels shade the dam surface. It’s also horrendously expensive so we’re looking at ways to do it cost effectively.
