Liquid waste plant

Sirromet has full waste water treatment onsite. The system was significantly upgraded in 2007 to manage increased capacity. Wastewater treatment reduces carbon loading and removes nutrient to produce a clean disinfected effluent.

Influent streams from the winery, restaurant, cellar door and bottling areas are mixed before moving sequentially through anoxic and aerobic treatment tanks where specialized bacteria break down the organic compounds in the waste. The wastewater is then clarified and disinfected prior to discharge. The effluent is combined with dam water prior to being used to irrigate limited areas of the property.

The plant operation is closely monitored and optimized by experienced staff under the specifications of our EPA license. All of which means none of our waste is going through sewer mains or being discharged into Moreton Bay – we are self sufficient and fully recycle in that regard.

Worm farm

Our commitment to the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ ethos extends to much of the packaging and consumables used on site. All cardboard and paper is separated from general waste and in combination with other plant based waste (such as crushed grape skins or stems) processed in our unique worm farm to produce quality compost for use over the site.

Rubbish storage

The Mt Cotton headquarters of Sirromet consists of a working winery and bottling facility, fine dining restaurant and function centre, and Cellar Door/café style area. With upwards of 1000 visitors on some weekends, non-compostable rubbish production and storage have been planned and managed from the early days of operation.

Cardboard and green waste is separated out as described; glass is separated and removed from site for recycling. Other rubbish is removed periodically by waste removal companies. Storage areas for rubbish are fully enclosed and refrigerated to prevent issues with smell and hygiene. Rubbish removal is scheduled to be outside of popular public visiting hours to minimise disruption to guests.
